Research profile
The mechanisms in cardiovascular development are very complex as extracardiac signaling appears to be important as well.
This holds for the cellular contribution, deriving from i.e. the neural crest and the second heart field including the proepicardial organ.
Hemodynamic factors (flow, pressure and others) are important in the active
beating heart as they regulate the expression of shear stress-response genes.
Over a thousand genes have been described to respond to changes in shear,
thereby regulating important vasculo-active substances.
An important intermediary is the shear-sensitive monocilium, that virtually each cell extends in its milieu.
They are active both in embryonic development and in disease processes
including arteriosclerotic plaque formation and many ciliopathies.
A Magnetic Resonance Imaging infrastructure was installed in Gorlaeus, and LUMC,
allowing imaging of embryos and animal models of arteriosclerosis.
Recently, attention has been shifted towards an evolutionary approach comparing
the cardiovascular system in reptilian taxa (snake, lizard, turtle, crocodile, birds) with mammals.
Most taxa have a single cardiac ventricle (except crocs and birds with 2 ventricles)
and two aorta's (except birds and mammals with 1 aorta),
making up for nice comparisons with congenital malformations in mammals including humans.
Niet-professionele bezigheden (hobbies):
