On August 25, 2011, the love of my life and best friend passed away in the Neuroscience Intensive care Unit of University Hospital at the age of 64.
Karin was born December 3, 1946 in Voorburg, Netherlands, but grew up in the Hague at the edge of the dunes in hearing distance of the North Sea. She loved the outdoors, music, and travel and was educated as a Zoologist at the University of Leiden and Wageningen.
I met her first in June, 1974, at Wageningen University while on sabbatical leave with the late Dr. René Cobben with whom hshe was studying.
Most of her close friends were fellow students deeply into music and they welcomed me to their group "Zwart Eb"
(Black Low Tide-as bluesharp player) during countless long nights of wine and jamming in Karin's flat above a shoe shop on the high street, the center of town.
During the year I was there we took long cycle rides throughout Holland on a tandem bicycle, attended numerous concerts everywhere and had a marvellous hiking trip across the Cairngorm mountains from Aviemore to Braemar in the Scottish Highlands just before I returned to Canada in August 1975.
She quickly followed and we were married November 6, 1976.
Besides me, Bruce, her grieving husband; she is survived by her loving sons Art and his wife Stephany, and Steve;
by her three wonderful grandchildren Clara, Miles and Brandt; in the Netherlands, by her loving brothers Rudy,
Dick and Joost en their families and, last but not least her dear friends, Ans and Jan.
As everyone who knew her knows, Karin radiated love, peace and kindness and so had countless friends who miss her as much as we.
I know her spirit is with us yet.
